Research in marine biology and ocean science is crucial for understanding marine ecosystems and how the world’s oceans influence climate. This is especially critical as our oceans come under greater pressure from human activities causing climate change, overfishing and pollution.

Our marine researchers are world experts across biology, ecology, fisheries, chemistry, physical and biological oceanography, climate science and geology.

Collaboration with partners across these disciplines and engagement with Traditional Owners places us at the forefront of advancing sustainable development and protecting our planet’s oceans.

We have key strengths in providing conservation solutions for the Great Barrier Reef, tropical wetlands and marine mammals, understanding and managing coastal processes, ocean–climate interactions, and marine resources throughout the Indo-Pacific.

Marine biology and ocean science is strongly supported at UQ with two island research stations: Heron Island Research Station in the Southern Great Barrier Reef, and Moreton Bay Research Station on Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island) in South East Queensland.
