Australia boasts more maritime territory than land, and marine industries comprise a substantial proportion of Australia’s GDP.

Our unique group of researchers work on all aspects of marine biology from the cellular and genetic to the ecosystem level, over timespans of days to millions of years, and on marine ecosystems from the equator to the poles. We address foundational questions in ecology, evolution, conservation biology, aquaculture and palaeobiology.

We collaborate extensively with the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies, and UQ's Centre for Marine Science, and have access to world-class field and laboratory facilities at the University's Heron Island and Moreton Bay research stations.

Our marine academics have strong links with stakeholders ranging from government and non-governmental management agencies at multiple scales to tourism operators and commercial fisheries seeking to responsibly and sustainably interact with marine ecosystems.
